Riley County Fire District 1 Leonardville and Ogden Fire Stations

Manhattan, KS

Working with Riley County Fire District 1, our full-service team developed a prototype fire station adaptable to multiple site and communities’ needs. This planning effort for a prototypical critical facility resulted in two stations developed for the fire district’s needs in Ogden and Leonardville.

Designed to have a modern vernacular appearance comprised within a four bay pre-engineered metal building structure with a mono-slope roof the stations are complemented by an architecturally-celebrated training room entry. Incorporated within the building space are two 1000 square foot apparatus bays with a third 750 square foot bay, an 820 square foot training room, restrooms and shower, area dedicated to equipment cleaning with provisions for a high-performance washer-extractor, and a mechanical mezzanine. The apparatus bays are provided diffusion of natural light through translucent panels elevated on the up-roof sidewalls to create a well-lit space supplemented with LED lighting fixtures. The stations are both located with direct access from a Kansas highway requiring special coordination with KDOT for vehicle access. The sites and location were selected to facilitate optimum response times to the communities served by emergency services. Although similar in configuration the buildings are differentiated from each other due to their locations. Located downtown, Leonardville’s Station 6 has set limits on its size and availability of road access and to match within the fabric of the community features an exterior limestone wainscot. Ogden’s Station 3 is located outside city limits and features expandable end wall framing for future expansion, modifications to highway traffic lights, and on site wastewater management.
