Lyons Waterline Replacement and AMR Water Meter Project

Lyons, KS

Due to water main breaks and leaks that caused significant water loss, the City of Lyons commissioned BG Consultants to replace waterlines and meters in the city. The goal of the project was to provide reliable water service to the City’s user base.

The replacements were a major undertaking for the City of Lyons. BG Consultants assisted the City with an application for KDHE Public Water Supply Loan Fund and prepared a business case for the Green Project Reserve fund. It was successful in obtaining loan forgiveness for the City to replace aging water lines, in addition to funding AMR water meters.  Once funding was acquired, the survey and design process began.

The total project required 34,447 feet of HDPE waterline, 147 waterline valve replacements, and 93 connections to existing waterlines, along with the replacement of 1260 water meters with remote meter reading capabilities. The majority of the waterline project was installed with horizontal directional drill techniques. This undertaking throughout the city required advance planning prior to and during construction to ensure minimal disruption to businesses and residents. BG’s carefully prepared Traffic Control Plan allowed streets to be open or partially open during major portions of work. Access to residences was maintained throughout construction, and the project was completed successfully in 2014.
