Forest Park Amphitheatre

Parsons, KS

Forest Park, located east of downtown Parsons, is the site of annual events including Katy Days, the Arts and Crafts Fair, and the Music in the Park Summer Concert Series. The City of Parsons commissioned BG Consultants to design a new amphitheatre at the northwest corner of the park. The amphitheatre was planned to accommodate a variety of community activities and provide technical support for musical entertainers and their sound and light equipment.

The pre-engineered shelter was situated very carefully to complement the existing tree pattern. Exterior building materials were selected to match those at the restroom facilities located nearby. An elevated front wall was finished with cut limestone veneer to match existing features of the park and to provide the proper sight lines between the entertainers on stage and the audience seated to the north. Considering long-term function of the structure, low-maintenance materials and finishes were chosen.

The 54 foot long structure measures 32 feet wide at the rear and flares out to 52 feet at the front performing area. Engineered foundation flood vents were designed for the 12 foot deep enclosed storage room at the rear, and the slope of the performance floor provides for positive water drainage and a level area for placement of sound equipment. Site improvements include an accessible path for pedestrian use, a paved seating area, connecting sidewalks, and an unloading approach for vehicles at the rear.
