19th and Louisiana Improvements

Lawrence, KS

BG Consultants was contracted by the City of Lawrence to perform an infrastructure improvement feasibility study at the intersection of 19th and Louisiana Streets, two minor arterials carrying a significant volume of traffic near the University of Kansas and Lawrence High School.  Several options were analyzed, including geometric improvements to the signalized intersection as well as converting the intersection to a multi-lane roundabout.  Ultimately, the City retained BG to design geometric improvements, off-street bus parking, and traffic signal improvements. Prior to the completion of this project, this intersection had one of the highest crash rates in Lawrence.

BG provided surveying, preliminary and final designs for signalization, geometric improvements, and pavement design services. Our team also designed waterline relocations for the Lawrence Utilities Department and prepared construction plans in accordance with KDOT design requirements.

BG’s design met the tight construction schedule, which was limited to the time between Lawrence High School graduation in late May 2008 and the start of Hawk Week at the University of Kansas in mid-August 2008. The project enhanced both traffic operations and public safety at this busy intersection.
