Velocity Church Adaptive Reuse
Lawrence, KS
United States
Velocity Church had been worshiping in temporary spaces for nearly a decade when they had the opportunity to purchase a building formerly housing a large grocery store. The building was more space than they needed at that time, but the church had plans for continued growth and expansion.
As a part of a multi-firm design team, BG Consultants was selected by the church to provide Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Life Safety Systems design for the adaptive redevelopment of this space to serve the needs of their ministry. In addition to the spaces that were remodeled for church use, the remaining areas of the building were set up to allow for up to five other tenant suites to allow the church to have their space provide income to the church until they need the additional space. The remodeled spaces included at 800-seat auditorium, dedicated children’s area, classrooms and multipurpose room, and a large lobby space.
BG Consultants provided evaluation of existing building systems and worked with the church to determine what needed to be replaced, what could be reused, and what additional equipment and systems were needed. Existing rooftop HVAC equipment was rehabilitated and repurposed. Existing electrical service equipment was repaired and reused. New lighting and plumbing systems were designed to meet the needs of the various uses throughout the building.
In 2025, the church was ready to consider expanding their auditorium, and BG Consultants was selected by Velocity Church to assist in the next phase of planning.
