University of Kansas Moore Hall Labs Remodel

University of Kansas Moore Hall Labs Remodel

Lawrence, KS
United States

Moore Hall has been the home of the Kansas Geological Survey since its construction in the early 1970's. The building is six stories with a mechanical penthouse above, and the top floor of the building includes laboratories used for geological research and analysis. The labs in rooms 603 and 607 remained largely unimproved since their original construction over 50 years ago, and no longer met the needs of the researchers using them.

Deficiencies in the labs included aged and corroded casework and plumbing fixtures, outdated lighting, inadequate convenience and instrument power connections, hazardous materials in the casework, flooring, and ceiling, and many modifications to the labs over the years for processes and equipment that were no longer in use. Most significantly, the existing laboratory fume hoods were in need of replacement, along with their exhaust systems, and the HVAC systems providing air to the labs were set up as recirculating systems not compliant with current laboratory design guidelines.

BG Consultants was engaged to partner with an architectural on-call firm for the University to design improvements for these labs. Improvements included new LED lighting and controls, new receptacles across all countertops and for fixed equipment, replacement of all plumbing fixtures, including the addition of eye wash and drench wand stations, installation of a new deionized water system including distribution piping and faucets, installation of replacement fume hoods (relocated from other University facilities) with new exhaust fans and controls, and replacement of existing HVAC systems with new dedicated air handling equipment set up for single-pass heating and cooling for spaces with fume hoods.
