KSU Housing & Dining Programming Study

Manhattan, KS

This programming and space needs assessment was the initial stage of Housing and Dining Services at Kansas State University responding to projected student growth and housing needs. BG Consultants was contracted to create a program that guided the development of designs for a new residence hall, dining center, and existing facility improvements for Goodnow Hall and Marlatt Hall. Together with the Housing and Dining Services Management Team and Campus Planning and Facilities Management, BG Consultants developed a program with written descriptions of key considerations, numeric and written space program, conceptual expansion diagrams, cost estimates, project schedule, proposed massing plan, facility design criteria, and supporting data.

Enrollment growth and demand for on-campus housing at KSU were the key factors driving the need for exploration of additional housing and dining space. Student housing was at capacity and the dining centers lacked space to adequately serve projected resident population. The following was recommended as part of the Housing and Dining Services Master Plan assessment:

  • New residence hall that accommodates 450 students in 2-bed student rooms
  • New dining center to serve 1,850 patrons
  • Goodnow Hall and Marlatt Hall facility improvements

Our architects worked to develop a program that will encourage active student life experiences and a residence hall environment that provides for planned and spontaneous community events.
